The Great American Cake Show, October 2015

About Me

My name is Amanda Marcelle and I am a cake decorator in the Columbia/Baltimore, MD area. Although being primarily self taught I have been decorating cakes professionally since 2014.

When I was growing up, my mother picked up the hobby of baking and decorating birthday cakes for all of her four children. These cakes, hands down, quickly became my favorite part of any special occasion. It was always intriguing to pick out a theme and see the cake come to life in our own kitchen.

When I turned 17, I was away from home on my birthday for the first time. I ended up decorating my own cake that year, which turned out to be a lot of fun! After that, my mother started teaching me everything she knew. Soon I branched out on my own, coming up with ideas for cakes, researching techniques that would work, and trying them out every chance I got.

After taking several art and psychology classes at HCC and UMBC, I applied for a job at the Kake Korner in Laurel, MD. I worked there for 18 months, first as a cake consultant before being promoted to cake decorator. I learned many things from my coworkers and fellow cake decorators by being in that environment and refining my skills.

To see how much I have improved, I entered The Great American Cake Show for the first time in 2014. My tiered cake placed 3rd in the beginner's division. In 2015 I entered again, this time coming away with several awards. My tiered cake won 1st place as well as Best of Division for the intermediate division and my cupcakes won 1st place in the advanced division as well as the Divisional Grand Prize.

I felt like I truly found my cake home at Creative Cakes in Silver Spring, MD. With a wealth of knowledge available and encouraging coworkers I was able to refine my growing cake skills in an accepting environment. The Creative Cakes team and I created a 500 serving replica of the Pentagon for an OPNAV event at the Pentagon. We were also featured on an episode of Cake Hunters (season 3, episode 4) where we created a beautiful 7 tier cake that rotated and lit up. Independently I entered the 2016 White Rose Sugar Art Competition and won Best of Division, Peoples Choice, as well as Decorator's Choice awards.

Today I continue to do what I am passionate about; making high quality cake art. What I love most about cake decorating is the extremely diverse and almost limitless ways that different art skills can be applied to create edible art - so it never gets boring! Every day is a day to learn something new.
